Built for the high country, not for tourists
The Earnslaw was launched on 24 February 1912 and entered service that August, built to carry passengers, sheep and cattle to the high-country stations around Lake Wakatipu before the roads reached them. Walter Peak was one of those stations — the ship you board today was, in her working life, this farm's actual supply line, not a purpose-built tourist vessel. She's named after Mount Earnslaw, the glaciated peak that dominates the head of the lake, which is itself a useful thing to point out to fellow passengers on a clear evening.
Twin engines, and a bunker that still needs shovelling
She's 51.2 metres long, 330 gross registered tons, and carries twin triple-expansion, jet-condensing steam engines producing around 500 horsepower between them, fed from a 14-tonne coal bunker, giving her a top speed of about 13 knots. None of that is automated — the stokers feed the fires by hand for every sailing, burning roughly a tonne of coal an hour while she's under way, a fuel and firing method that hasn't meaningfully changed since 1912. It's worth saying plainly: this is not a diesel engine dressed up to look old, or a coal-effect display for atmosphere. The coal is real, the fire is real, and the work below decks is real.
The engine room is open, and that's the point
A walkway leads down into the engine room itself, where the triple-expansion engines are visible turning at close range and the stokers can be seen feeding the boilers. It's a level of access most working heritage vessels don't offer — on the Earnslaw it's a routine part of every crossing rather than a special tour, which is why it's the part most visitors mention first afterwards. Onboard signage in the engine room spells out her full specifications for anyone who wants the detail: the twin-screw arrangement, the class of engine, the boiler and coal-capacity figures, and her passenger capacity of 389.
"The Lady of the Lake"
The Earnslaw is widely known by this nickname, and is generally described as the only remaining commercial passenger-carrying coal-fired steamship in the Southern Hemisphere still in active service. She underwent her longest and most significant survey in 2025, including engine work and boiler retubing — maintenance that keeps a 1912 working ship working, rather than a restoration that took her out of service permanently. RealNZ has operated the Walter Peak pastoral lease and the associated cruises since 1987, but the ship herself predates that arrangement by three quarters of a century.
A pianist, and a tradition older than most Queenstown attractions
By long tradition, a pianist plays in the saloon — usually on the return leg — and passengers sing along from a songbook of familiar tunes, a small ritual that predates almost everything else currently marketed to Queenstown visitors. It's a low-key detail next to the engine room, but it's part of what makes the crossing feel like boarding a genuinely old ship rather than a themed replica of one. A licensed bar and café operates on board as well, so the return leg tends to be the more social, unhurried half of the evening.
Why the coal detail matters more than it sounds
It's easy to read "coal-fired" as a piece of marketing colour and move on, but it's the reason almost everything else about the evening works the way it does: the smell on deck, the visible fire in the engine room, the genuine crew workload, and the fact that this ship simply cannot be sped up or automated the way a modern vessel could. A tonne of coal an hour, shovelled by hand, on the same lake, since 1912 — that's not a detail added for atmosphere, it's the actual mechanism keeping a 114-year-old ship running two return crossings a day.
